THE COURTEENERS AND SHED SEVEN SET TO ROCK REBIRTH OF YORK’S LEGENDARY FIBBERS
Shed Seven
Redesigned, remixed and refuelled for a new era, York’s iconic live music venue, Fibbers, has been saved.
Indie favourites The Courteeners, fresh from headlining the iTunes Festival, are set to rock the re-launch party on Friday 3rd September with a special live performance. The night will continue with cutting edge DJ’s playing into the small hours.
York’s own Shed Seven are also set to toast the rebirth of Fibbers as a premier destination for York’s and the UK’s live music and club-goers, playing the legendary venue on Friday 17th September and top electropop/indie group Two Door Cinema Club will play on September 12th.
Fibbers has been given a new lease of life with a much needed £250,000 refurbishment, which includes a state-of-the-art sound and light system.
From Friday September 3rd, music lovers and clubbers will be able to see major national and international touring bands and DJ talent, thanks to the might of new owners, Tokyo Industries Ltd, the UK’s leading live music and nightclub owner-operator.
Fibbers joins a prestigious portfolio of Tokyo Industries’ high profile venues including FAC251 The Factory in Manchester, a joint venture with New Order’s Peter Hook (recently voted 3rd best club in the world by TNT Magazine), DIGITAL in Newcastle (recently voted 15th best club in the world in a poll of 1000 of the world’s best DJ’s), DIGITAL in Brighton, TOKYO ‘Mansion House’ venues in Huddersfield, Bradford, Oldham and Newcastle and celebrity A-listers members club TUP TUP Palace in Newcastle’s city centre.
Nigel Holiday, Business Development Director, Tokyo Industries Ltd, says it’s good news for York:“I live in York, come from Pickering and went to University here; I’m well aware of Fibbers, it’s a local institution and has been well established over the last eighteen years.” “Our intention is to expand its iconic live music status while seriously increasing its clubbing potential for boutique and destination DJ driven nights for music lovers.” “The aim is to dovetail Fibbers into the talent booking agenda for Factory, Manchester & Digital Newcastle, to enjoy routing benefits for national & internationally touring bands & DJs bringing top acts to York. We hope anyone who loves their music as much as we do will come down and rediscover the new Fibbers, we can’t wait.”
Tickets for the all shows are available now from Ticketweb and York’s Attic Records.

THE LEADMILL PRESENTS DUANE EDDY YORK GRAND OPERA HOUSE WEDNESDAY OCTOBER 13th 2010
Duane Eddy
TICKETS £26 ON SALE SEPTEMBER 4 FROM THE VENUE ONLY
The legendary simple ‘twangy’ guitar sound of Duane Eddy has made him one of rock ‘n’ roll’s most famous instrumental artists.  The sound was created after hearing Bill Justis’ famous ‘Raunchy’ (the song that George Harrison first learned to play).
Together with producer Lee Hazlewood, Eddy co-wrote a deluge of hits mixed with versions of standards, using the bass strings of his Gretsch guitar recorded through an echo chamber.
The debut ‘Movin’ ‘N’ Groovin’’ made the lower end of the US chart, and for the next six years Eddy repeated this formula with greater success. His backing group, the Rebel Rousers was a tight, experienced band with a prominent saxophone sound played by Jim Horn and Steve Douglas, completed by pianist Larry Knechtel.
Among their greatest hits were ‘Rebel-Rouser’, ‘Shazam’, ‘Peter Gunn’, ‘The Ballad Of Paladin’ and ‘Theme From Dixie’.
One of Eddy’s most memorable hits was the superlative theme music for the film Because They’re Young, brilliantly combining his bass notes with evocative strings. The song has been used by UK disc jockey Johnny Walker as his theme music for over 25 years and this classic still sounds fresh. Eddy’s ‘(Dance With The) Guitar Man’ was another major hit, which was unusual for the fact that the song had lyrics, sung by a female group. Eddy’s albums played heavily on the use of ‘twang’ in the title, but that was exactly what the fans wanted.
The Leadmill is bringing Duane to York Opera House on Wednesday 13th October 2010, also in association with Mr H.

THE BIGGEST THING TO HIT YORK SINCE THE ROMANS TOKYO INDUSTRIES PURCHASE TRU CLUB
Tru
The future of clubbing in York just keeps getting bigger and brighter as the owners of Digital & Tup Tup Palace clubs is Newcastle, announce its purchase of Tru night club from Luminar leisure.
The biggest club in York, Tru on Tofts Green (Previously Toffs) will undergo a lavish makeover, new layout, and one of the best sound systems in the UK from Funktion One. The club will become a twin concept venue, the main club rebranded as TOKYO continuing the Mansion Party style of the firms existing TOKYO venues in Newcastle, Huddersfield, Bradford & Oldham. TOKYO York will open late September with a major re launch party. The upstairs room will undergo a fuller transformation in time for October, when it will become an exclusive members’ venue with a separate entrance. The deal came about as Tokyo Industries were onsite in York at their newly acquired FIBBERS venue. After paying a visit to Tru, Aaron Mellor, Managing Director Tokyo Industries Ltd, says he was surprised to find how neglected the club had become: “The old Toffs was a fantastic club, layout-wise it’s still one of the best we’ve been to and three great rooms offer a choice of music selection. The place had just lost its love, a poor drinks selection, even worse sound system, and no real attention to customer service - it needs some sparkle adding back”
“Tru is getting one of the UKs best sound systems from Funktion One and some of the World’s biggest DJs and club brands – many have never visited York – are set to play here. York is a great City, with some great bars but it lacks a great club.”
Tokyo Industries owns and operates nineteen of the UK’s leading live music and nightclub venues, including high profile venues DIGITAL in Brighton & Newcastle (recently voted 15th best club in the World in a poll of 1000 of the Worlds best DJs), alongside its other Tokyo clubs and celebrity A-Lister members’ club TUP TUP PALACE in Newcastle’s city centre, FAC251 & SOUTH in Manchester, and most recently, York’s own legendary live music venue FIBBERS (Also currently undergoing refurbishment – reopens 3rd September with a string of top gigs - The Courteeners 3rd September, Two Door Cinema Club 12th September and York legends Shed Seven September 17th).
Revealing what’s in store for Tokyo, Nigel Holiday, Business Development Director,
Tokyo Industries said: “I live in York; I’m originally from Pickering and went to University here so I’m well aware there’s a real need for something more than a typical nightclub experience in York. People want better drinks selections in today’s clubs; they deserve better sound & some really great DJs & entertainment.”
“We re-open late September – Returning Student nights to the mid-week agenda (Wednesdays will be York St John’s Uni and Thursdays York Uni) Fridays we’re bringing Lovedough straight back from its Radio1 Weekend in Ibiza, a brand familiar to York’s Icons days a few years ago – some incredible international Live & DJ talent. Saturday’s will be home to some of the World’s biggest dance brands
– Hed Kandi, Ministry of Sound, KissDaFunk & Retro (the UKs biggest club classics event) that’s our offer and we can’t wait to bring the party to York.”

ROSES KINGS CASTLES TO PLAY YORK
Roses Kings Castles

Screaming Tarts presents... Roses Kings Castles + support. Stereo, York. Monday November 8th 2010
Adam Ficek is most commonly known to the general public for his day-job as drummer in notorious British rock act Babyshambles. As a member of the band fronted by Pete Doherty, the most talked- and written-about rock star of our time, Adam has seen the best and worst of life at the casualty-laden core of the music industry, but what m...any people don’t know is he is also a talented multi-instrumentalist who writes and performs beautifully crafted songs under the nom-de-plume of Roses Kings Castles.
Originally conceived as a creative outlet whilst Babyshambles were on holiday, Roses Kings Castles became something more than a means of occupying himself during down time. “I continually write, whether it’s big band arrangements, electro riffs or folk-pop songs. I just needed an avenue to walk down.”
The Roses Kings Castles sound is lost somewhere between Belle & Sebastian’s pastoral warmth and the hallucinatory six-string invocations of Syd Barrett, and manages to blissfully combine astute acoustic pop melodies with the finest elements of classic British songwriting.
Adam’s eponymus debut album has sold more than 3,000 copies since its release in September 2008 and a number of dates around Europe and America has seen him picking up many new fans across the globe. A string of low-key UK and Scandinavian shows in Spring 2009 saw Adam previewing new material, and working with a full band.
Following the release of a 6 track limited edition cassette only release (!) in May 2009, Adam re-entered the studio and cut a number of tracks. The first fruits of his labour were released as the ‘Apples & Engines’ EP, and a new album, Suburban Time Bombs was recorded in the months that followed.
The first single from the album, ‘One Born Every Minute’ was issued on 3rd May, and will be followed by an album this autumn.

UK’S LEADING CLUB OPERATOR, TOKYO INDUSTRIES SAVES YORK’S LEGENDARY ‘FIBBERS’ VENUE
Fibbers
Tokyo Industries, the UK’s leading live music and nightclub owner-operator has announced the acquisition of York’s historic ‘Fibbers’ venue from its present London based operator Barfly. Tokyo Industries Ltd, which operates from bases in Manchester and Newcastle, owns and operates sixteen of the UKs leading live music and nightclub venues, including high profile venues DIGITAL in Newcastle (recently voted 15th best club in the World in a poll of 1000 of the Worlds best DJs), Digital in Brighton alongside its TOKYO ‘Mansion House’ venues in Newcastle, Huddersfield, Bradford & Oldham, and celebrity A-Lister members club TUP TUP PALACE in Newcastle’s city centre. Tokyo Industries recently (February) extended its live music offer in a joint venture with New Order’s Peter Hook in the purchase of the former FACTORY RECORDS HEAD OFFICE in Manchester, redeveloping that with Haçienda designer Ben Kelly & acclaimed sound system manufacture Funktion One to deliver a state-of-the-art live music and indie club. The intention for Fibbers is similar; to expand its iconic live music status while
seriously increasing it’s clubbing potential for boutique and destination DJ driven nights for music lovers.Nigel Holiday, operations manager, Tokyo Industries Ltd hails from north Yorkshire, he commented: “Coming from Pickering and having been to University here, I’m well aware of Fibbers, it’s a local institution and has been well established over the last eighteen years. We’re keen to let people know we’re in this to preserve what clubbers and live music fans like me love about Fibbers. It’s a great club with a great reputation & booking policy, we remain respectful of that. Our aim is to give the venue some much needed TLC, an epic new Funktion One sound system and total refurbishment, designed to expand the music programming in both live and club night formats. We are also exploring ways to increase the venues currently restrictive capacity to assist in the booking of higher profile talent” Aaron Mellor, managing director, Tokyo Industries Ltd commented: “The aim is to dovetail Fibbers into the talent booking agenda for Factory, Manchester & Digital Newcastle, to enjoy routing benefits for national & internationally touring bands & DJs – our emphasis is concentrated on a more clubbing element that will compliment the existing live reputation Fibbers currently enjoys.” A full re-launch party is being planned at Fibbers for late summer once the refurbishment has been completed. Until then the venue will stay open with its existing live programme and some minor tweaks to its current club format. A full revised club format will follow late summer. Within the last week, Tokyo Industries Ltd has also bought one of Manchester’s most popular clubs, South, Clint Boons’ (XFM/Inspiral Carpets) basement venue located on South King Street in the City centre.

The Levelers play The Duchess - Tuesday 16th November 2010
Levellers

Folk-punk band Levellers announce a “grass roots” tour in November 2010 taking in 18 towns and cities around the UK, one being YORK.  After enjoying some sweaty club shows in Europe in 2009 the band have decided to book a tour playing gigs not on their usual UK touring circuit. The band will be playing in some of the towns and cities they played at when they were first starting out and others that they have never played before!
Fiddle player Jon Sevink had this to say “We really enjoyed playing some smaller venues in Europe last year and thought that it would be fun do something different in our own country - a return to our roots”.
To celebrate the 20th Anniversary of its original release in 1990, the Levellers debut album, “A Weapon Called The Word” is being re-issued on the band’s own label On The Fiddle recordings in October 2010. The album has been digitally re-mastered and includes four previously un-released tracks from a BBC Radio 1 session and tour DVD, shot on a handy cam by the touring crew that dates from 1991. The BBC tracks are from a Mark Goodier session and the DVD catalogues the heady days of the Levellers meteoric rise.
As a way of documenting the tour and highlighting the release of “A Weapon Called The Word” the Levellers are making a groundbreaking blogumentary. The band have enlisted the help of film-maker and ex-Chumbawamba vocalist Dunstan Bruce. Dunstan’s company, Dandy Films, is based at the Levellers Metway Studios and he has made documentary called “Clowns” that was broadcast by BBC TV and more recently he has documented Sham 69’s first visit to China.

The blogumentary will comprise of candid footage of the band on tour in the provinces of the UK, interviews with local pressure groups, fans, grass roots activists, local characters and location pieces. The aim of the blogumentary is to show life on the road for a touring band and to give a mouthpiece to anyone who has something to say in the towns that the band visit. Several new video clips will be uploaded each day HERE throughout the tour.

THE WEEK AHEAD PICKS OF THE WEEK

Friday 3rd September 2010 - The Courteeners live at Fibbers - This is the re-opening date after the £250K refurb. New layout, new sound system, improved sightlines etc. The Courteeners ended 2009 by playing the biggest gig of their career to date. The gig, at Manchester Central (formerly G Mex), planned earlier in the year was a brave gesture from a band with just one album to their name but when all 10,000 tickets sold out in just five days it was clear that their fans were still with them. The night was a triumph and will surely be remembered as one of the highlights of the year. Coming on with the kind of confidence we have come to expect from the band's songwriter and frontman, Liam Fray launched into the set with a track from the band's soon to be released album, 'Falcon' and the venue erupted. One journalist was moved to comment, "...giant cheers from a boisterous throng in a mood of utter jubilation. As they end this decade as unarguably Manchester's biggest going concern, The Courteeners look set to spend the next one as one of Britain's most important rock & roll bands."
