MARCH

Thursday 1st March 2012

Matt Cardle
Limited availability, please contact the box office for more information. X-Factor 2010 winner Matt Cardle will be making his debut appearance at the York Barbican on Thursday 1st March next year. This performance is the only date announced in Yorkshire so far. After winning the X-Factor, Matt Cardle’s debut single When We Collide hit the UK charts at number 1 and stayed there for three consecutive weeks, becoming the second biggest selling single of the year. He was the most popular X-Factor contestant last year, being beaten only once in the weekly voting numbers. This year has been about touring with X Factor, and over the last four months, studiously writing and recording his debut album Letters, which reached number 2 in the UK album charts. Not only has Matt created something special, he has come up with a combination of music and lyrics far beyond the expectations of any chart debutant. On his upcoming tour, Matt will be performing songs from Letters, including hit single Run For Your Life. Don’t miss your chance to see him performing his amazing new material live.

THE REAL PEOPLE + THE SONNET + RED CHEVRONS
“The Realies" formed in 1987 and over the following four years were as pivotal as The La's and The Stone Roses in reinventing rock and roll, after synth-led new wave had dominated the 80s. Signing to Columbia and and selling 100,000 copies of their self titled album, the singles "Open Up your Mind", "Window Pane"' and "The Truth"' all went on to critical acclaim. There can be no doubt that the Oasis sound borrowed heavily from The Real People and given the circumstances it's obvious why one band, fresh from the other end of the M62, untainted by having been dropped and containing one Liam Gallagher would steal more than the Griffiths' thunder. The band toured solidly, building a growing fanbase and supported close friends Ocean Colour Scene for nearly eighteen months. Cher covered one of their early songs "One by One" which became a worldwide hit and they continued writing, recording and touring with, amongst others, Bowie and Nelly Furtado and writing also for BBMak, Rooster, Tunde and Atomic Kitten. Their successful publishing company and recording studio complex "Realistic Music" has gone from strength to strength and they also finally gained recognition for their role in developing Oasis with songwriting credits on "Rocking Chair" and an agreement that without their help Oasis would never have sounded the way they did! They remain one of the truly great bands, as their fans will testify!!

The Diary of Anne Frank
Anne Frank's world famous diary charts two years of her life from 1942 to 1944. This extraordinary personal account of hope, courage and survival has united and touched people world wide. Whilst hidden from the German Nazis, with her Jewish family, in a secret annex in Amsterdam, Anne documented her hopes, frustrations and day to day experiences in confinement. Anne's wry observations of herself and her companions have been dramatised in this stunning play, evoking all the original sentiments of a young girl's dramatic and heartbreaking diary, written in the most hostile of environments. From the same partnership that produced last spring's sell out production of To Kill A Mockingbird comes another classic text.

Peter Grant + Rubylux
He's been endorsed by Gary Barlow who called him "one to watch", likened to Adele thanks to his soulful voice, and is already a firm favourite with Radio 2. Not bad for a 24 year-old from York who recorded most of his new album while sleeping on a floor. If you think you've heard Peter Grant's name before, it's probably because you have. So let's go right back to the beginning of his story and bring you properly up to speed.... Peter started singing at the tender age of seven, taking influence from his father who used to gig in local bars and clubs. "I loved watching my dad perform and I'd sometimes get up on stage and sing a couple of cheesy songs with him. People who were around my dad were singing big standards, Rat Pack and jazzy numbers, and I got hooked. From then on I started spending any money I got on vinyl. Music became everything to me and I decided to learn the piano. By the time I was 12 I was gigging in to old people's homes, working men's clubs - you name it." Word soon spread across the circuit about Peter's incredible voice and some local agents picked him up. "By the time I hit my teens I was singing at weddings, funerals, clubs, corporate events - the lot. Then I moved to more credible venues like Jazz clubs. I wanted to get as much experience as possible. School became secondary, but thankfully my parents were really behind me and they could see how hard I was working at the music. I started writing my own songs and I had a mini studio set up at home and I would vibe stuff and try out different sounds. I also made a few extra quid making backing tracks for other artists who played in clubs. I devoted everything to music." A couple of years later - having made a name for himself on the club circuit - a 16 year-old Peter was offered several jobs singing on cruise ships. But with school yet to finish, it was a tough choice to make. After weighing up his options he decided to go for it, knowing that music mattered more to him than anything else. When he returned with a wealth of experience behind him, he was ready to take the next step towards making and releasing an album. So, aged 17, he decided to try out for a pretty well known talent competition. "X Factor was coming to Leeds so I decided to try out. I performed for Simon Cowell, Louis Walsh and Sharon Osbourne and got put through, but when I was sent the contract to sign I realised that they would have basically owned me, so I didn't take it any further. I was really torn because I knew it could have been my big chance, but I had to stay true to myself and trust my gut feeling." It was evident he'd made the right decision when he was spotted by Don Readman from Focus Music whilst playing a gig. He was swiftly signed to Universal Music, and two weeks later found himself recording in Abbey Road Studios. "It was mad. I was there with a full orchestra making my first album, which was released when I was 18. I was overwhelmed by all the attention I was getting. Three weeks before I'd been driving 300 miles to go to a gig and sleeping in my car because I couldn't afford a hotel room, and here I was being put up in The Hilton." Peter's debut album, New Vintage, went top ten and achieved gold status, selling over 200,000 copies. The second album, Traditional, followed soon after. "I wasn't given the chance to be properly involved with the second album and I didn't like the way I was styled. The record company were trying to make me something I wasn't comfortable with it. I think it showed as my heart wasn't in it." When the time came for Peter to record his third album, he had lost even more faith in his deal. So when a covers album was suggested, he knew it was time to walk away. "It was a nightmare and I spent the next six months in a legal battle which left me broke. I found myself at 21 at a total loss as to what I was going to do next. I was literally watching everything fall apart in front of my face." After taking some time out to work out his next move, he began working with a producer friend called Andy Wright (Simply Red, Imelda May) at Sphere Studios in Battersea. "Sphere Studios became my home - literally. I was so skint I ended up living in a spare room there. I had a rail for my clothes, my music equipment and a bed on the floor. It was ridiculous, but also the best place I've ever lived. I had no money but the local gym let me go there for free, and an amazing guy called Shane Mani owned a restaurant around the corner and would feed me for free every night. For 18 months I got wrecked, made great music and slept in a room with no windows. I learnt an incredible amount and got to play with all of the big boy toys. I started writing songs and making tracks again, and although it was the poorest time of my life, it was the best." 18 months ago Peter moved into his own flat (complete with windows) and continued working at the studios with the likes of Peter Vitesse, Roachy, Gavin Goldberg and Andy Wright. Then along came the break he'd been waiting for. "I'd been creating my own tracks, but I had no money to put them out. Then through my manager Claire XXXX I got an investor. That money allowed me to make the album and I went to The Dog House in Henley to do some sessions with Mark Hudson (Aerosmith, Ringo Starr, Hanson) and various other writers. We came away with 70 songs, from which we selected 12. I got a band together and we recorded at Sphere, The Dog House and Abbey Road." The album, Too Close, is set for release next year, and two tracks have already been selected to feature in Noel Clarke's latest film The Knot, which hits cinemas on Valentine's Day. "The album is pop as in its popular music and contemporary. But the songs are still credible with big, dramatic sounds and classic production. My voice is naturally very croony, so it's also got a jazzy feel to it. There are Arabic influences on there, hip-hop grooves, orchestral sounds - it's a real mish-mash. I spent a lot of time travelling around India and Egypt and those experiences definitely shaped the album too. I finally feel like I've made the album I've always wanted to."

Puressence
Puressence have had more than their share of diehard fans. Those with the same life-and-death commitment shown to bands like The Smiths. But when the fan is a luminous American folk-rock legend, with over 50 years in the business of music, that's something else. Step forward Judy Collins. And what exactly seduced such a venerated goddess? To begin with, frontman James Mudriczki. "Where did he learn to sing like that?" she wonders. "His voice is an instrument of such clarity and purity and flexibility, it just does you in. He's got a range that just goes forever. And I love that Manchester sound! They're such a moving experience." "The biggest compliment we can have is that our songs move people," James underlines the band's game plan. "If you don't strive for that emotional sweet spot, then you should give up." Judy Collins likes it so much, she's singing on two tracks on the new Puressence album 'Solid State Recital: 'When Your Eyes Close' - the band's new single and the best bet for a hit single since their breakthrough Top 40 hit 'This Feeling' - and the album's seven-minute intro 'Swathes Of Sea Made Stone'. Both emotion-soaked beauties, they benefit from featuring Collins pure vocal dovetailing with Mudriczki's extraordinary and distinctive vibrato. Of all the classic guitar bands, Manchester's Puressence have always been about the emotion. Rollercoaster emotion, from the fragile to the euphoric. For years, they've been slaying fans with their songs, the best of which were included on their 2009 compilation 'Sharpen Up The Knives', which drew on the band's Island Records years between 1996 and 2002.

GIRLSCHOOL + PSYCHOBABYLON + ASOMVEL
You at the back there – PUT IT AWAY! Few bands in the world have the opportunity to celebrate a 30th Anniversary together and fewer still have done it with such gusto and fire as four sister sledgehammers from London called Girlschool. Yup, classic metalhead bands are on the march and UK legends GIRLSCHOOL are amongst them. Forget The Bangles, L7, Vixen, The Runaways … pah, also-rans! And they still sound like a breath of fresh air ... albeit with more than a hint of smudged, misapplied lipstick lingering in the wing. They may be in their 40s but they’re still trailblazers first coming to prominence supporting Motorhead on their 'Overkill' tour in ’79 and still kicking serious freckle live albeit a little older, a little wiser but definitely still kicking ass. Original members, Kim McAuliffe Enid Williams and Denise Dufort are joined by Jackie Chambers – who replaces original guitarist, the late Kelly Johnson R.I.P. - who sadly passed away in July 2007. This is, and always has been, a rock band to be reckoned with ...

The South
Song For Whoever', ‘Perfect Ten', ‘Rotterdam', ‘Don't Marry Her', ‘You Keep It All In', ‘Old Red Eyes Is Back', the list of hits is almost daunting and The South are bringing their music back to the nation. Dave Hemingway and Ali Wheeler [lead singers with The Beautiful South along with departed songwriter Paul Heaton] loved the songs and life on the road too much to just muse on past glories, and so The South was formed. Now the band are delighted to announce an intimate series of headline shows across the UK in February and March 2012 - tickets are on sale 17 October 2011. The "Small Is Beautiful" tour is a great chance for lovers of this truly classic British Pop band to reconnect with the musicians and the music once again. Joining Hemingway and Wheeler are fellow mainstays from the original band: keyboard wizard Damon Butcher and the potent horn section of Gaz Birtles and Tony Robinson that brought so much to the live shows. On top of a slew of classic singles, the band are also working in some brand new material. If you loved the music of The Beautiful South first time around, then you're in luck - The South offer a bona fide chance to hear some of the greatest ever Pop songs performed as they were intended to be, by those who played them in the first place.

KING CHARLES
Psychedelic vibrant acoustica shaman who cares not for the cool/uncool guidelines. Wild hair, pirate shirts and waxed moustache to the fore, our dandy of the underworld describes his visions in raunchy skiffle-rock, operatics and shanties. Early years spent learning the cello, singing in a choir, writing poetry and getting into folk and country via Bob Dylan quite naturally led our hero to the uniquely English tradition of psych-inflected pastoral whimsy. He’s toured with Laura, Noah and Mumfords and now he’s in York. Tickets will be at a premium for this – early purchase advised!

Drawing on the inspiration of electronica, ambient, classical and dance music as they take their strange, beautiful, cinematic, future music to exciting new vistas where the inspiration of Burial, Mount Kimbie and Flying Lotus rubs shoulders with the textures of Arve Henriksen and Bon Iver and echoes of Steve Reich and Max Richter. But all underpinned by a shared joy in collective music making as the band push their inimitable music into the future. Portico Quartet's third, self-titled, album is released in January 2012 on Real World Records. It is the sound of a band that refuses to stand still as they add new electronic inspiration to their trademark sound. But there are no shortcuts here, the music is played live, not pre-recorded, and the hard won collective empathy that is at the heart of their sound remains their primary touchstone. Full of mystery and drama Portico Quartet still take the listener on an unparalleled journey and live they pack a heavy punch as the band looks defiantly into the future.

The Apples also garnered praise and international success for, the now notorious track, ‘Killing’ a cover of Rage Against The Machine and their spine tingling tribute to Amy Winehouse as they cover ‘You Know I’m No Good’ .

GRAEME CLARK (WET WET WET)
Hot on the heels of highly aclaimed Solitary Soul tour and EP, Graeme Clark returns to the stage promoting the release of his first album – Mr Understanding. Graeme's pedigree as a song writer is proven. After all, he was a key writer of many of Wet Wet Wet's thirty chart hits. And now he's writing songs to perform himself. The move to centre stage has shown Graeme to be a natural and talented performer. Intimate, accoustic shows provide the perfect environment to see the man and to hear his music in a more natural way. As a well-known music industry insider put it “GC is without ego. He lives to perform and just loves getting close to the audience”. No surprise that he's always pleased to say hello after his shows. On stage Graeme is joined by Wet Wet Wet guitarist, Graeme Duffin, and old friend, Iain Duff, on accordion and piano. The songs are tuneful, thoughtful and, as you might expect, soulful with a interesting range of influences. The music has been well-received. Naturally there's a hint of The Wets in parts of the music. But there's much, much more to Graeme's musical vocabulary. Free from the limitations that a successful band can bring, his music is flourishing and exhibiting the best of his creative seams. A natural enthusiasm is evident on the album and in the live show. But, as Graeme says “I love that band and it would be pompous and foolish to turn my back on it”. As a result, the set includes some old favourites in addition to the new material – a set that aims to welcome everyone to the world of GC. Mr Understanding is available in January and the Solitary Soul EP is available to buy on Graeme's website – www.graemeclark.co.uk. You can hear song snippets there too.

GRETCHEN PETERS + LYNNE HANSON
Grammy nominated singer-songwriter Gretchen Peters calls the new Hello Cruel World her “most close-to-the-bone work, written at a time when I felt absolutely fearless about telling the truth.” Gretchen and guest Rodney Crowell sing, “Life is still a beautiful disaster,” on “Dark Angel.” but keep the accent on the “beautiful” throughout her ninth disc, with both her poetic language and the spare, evocative sounds she created in the studio to support her organic story-telling. Peters’ warm-honey voice softens the edge of desperation in the character study “Camille,” where a gently blown muted trumpet offers shadings of cool jazz, and in “ The Matador” the earthy maturity of her phrasing injects empathy — a quality that makes all of Peters’ songs ring consistently true — into a tale about the dark underbelly of love. Peters’ own voice and guitar playing have been at the core of her music since she started performing on Colorado folk circuit as a teenager. Inspired by Paul Simon, Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell and the new generation Steve Earle, Nanci Griffith and Rodney Crowell, Peters relocated to Music City in the late 1980s. Initially she found Nashville inspiring. “Being in a place where you can hear so many good songwriters perform their work on just an acoustic guitar really made me understand the anatomy of songs in a way I didn’t until I moved here,” she says. The downside was a music business culture that typically perceived “singer” and “songwriter” as different jobs. “The either/or attitude was baffling, since all my favorite artists also wrote their own material,” Peters says. “I never had any aspirations of being a hit songwriter for other artists.” Nonetheless, Martina McBride’s 1995 recording of Peters’ “Independence Day,” the gritty story of an abused woman’s revenge, made her a songwriting sensation. The performance received a “Best Country Song” Grammy nomination and won the Country Music Association’s “Song of the Year” title. After that a string of great vocalists — Pam Tillis, Trisha Yearwood, Patty Loveless, Neil Diamond, George Strait, Etta James — began to record Peters’ songs. Since her 1996 debut The Secret Of Life, Peters has recorded five other solo albums: Gretchen Peters (2001), Halcyon (2004), Trio Live (2006), Burnt Toast and Offerings (2007) and Northern Lights (2008). The compilation Circus Girl was released in 2009. And that same year Peters collaborated with one of her favorite songwriters, Tom Russell, for their One To the Heart, One To the Head. “Since I was a child I’ve had a creative urge knocking inside me and I’ve acted on it, ” Peters offers. “Early on it was poetry, sometimes art, and sometimes, as a kid, dance. Until I found the guitar I was interested in anything expressive. By then words were a friend, but music was a tall dark stranger that I’ve been in love with, or maybe stalking, ever since.”

After fans were left spilling out of a packed 5000 capacity Bohemia Tent at Sonisphere Festival 2011, InMe’s loyal hordes could be excused for feeling the need for a full UK tour; if a 34-date tour across the UK and Ireland doesn’t prove that this is a band who give back what they get from their fans then not much else will … February 2012 will see InMe’s fifth studio album, “The Pride”, released; the tour schedule around the album will take in the sweatiest of venues around the UK and joining them will be two of the UK’s finest underground bands – to be announced in the coming weeks! At Sonisphere 2010 Kerrang witnessed “fans old and new celebrate a band who lionheartedly refuse to die”, and it’s this spirit – driven by a desire to make and perform music as they have done since they were teens thrust into the spotlight in 2003 – that makes InMe one of the most respected bands in the UK alternative rock scene. New album The Pride will see the band truly move on to the next stage, a rebirth and progression all at once with an innovative approach that puts artists and their fans in control of the development of the album. Having seen the overwhelming support frontman Dave McPherson received for his solo album in March 2011 via the same route, it was clear to InMe that their fans would want to be involved in how “The Pride” was released. Starting in November, the InMe Pledge Music campaign will offer up a multitude of incentives to fans all pointed towards the ultimate goal of helping InMe reach as many fans as possible as they embark on the second phase of a journey that is far from over.

Martin Rivas + cara sebastian
Martin Rivas - A brilliant singer-songwriter who rises above restriction & creates against the odds, & a mainstay of the New York singer/songwriter community. Some people never sleep, and some artists never stop creating. Martin Rivas would be one of these people. The man whose music has brought so much joy and inspiration to musicians and listeners alike here in NYC is back with a new five-track EP that shows not only Rivas’s range and diversity in stylings but also his deeply emotional vulnerability in the crafting of his songs. The Convalescence EP is quite literally a resurrection out of broken-ness — an album written mostly in solitude while Rivas was laid up recovering from an ankle surgery that resulted in severe complications. Rivas told almost no one of the work he was doing and, upon releasing the album just recently, has given listeners a glimpse into some of the darker musings that encompassed his time in recovery. Rivas’s previous album, Sea of Clouds, is intrinsically hopeful and optimistic. Songs like “Heckuva Day” and “Eclipse” are so full of joy, they leave nothing wanting, especially when performed live. Meanwhile, “Get Yourself Together” and “Hide in Me” pluck the heartstrings and soothe the ears toward gratitude and love. Highly mastered beats blend seamlessly with stripped-down, breathtaking acoustic and a cappella moments. The album is stunning in lyricism and musicality, and shows Rivas’s great love for the music and for life itself. The Convalescence EP is naturally darker — time to consider things like origin, religion, family, and the harder parts of life itself leading to an album that is relevant to Sea of Clouds in the way it breaks down — much of which he created in his optimism. The guitar tremblings that open the EP with “Behind their Thumb” feel like the soundtrack for a long winding car ride across generations and times and places. There is a deep sense of history in the mere 30 seconds of strumming and repetition. “The Cage” ponders the stars and the sky and blends beautiful melodies with a hint of slow R&B rhythm. “This Winter Isn’t Ending” is reminiscent of the experimentation in The Beatles’ Sgt. Pepper’s album, with an incredible questioning tone to the lyricism. In the final track, “Raise Me Again,” Rivas blends his noted upbeat progressions and instrumentation with a story of adult longing for a reexamined childhood. All in all, an eclectic but amazingly focused collection — a collection of stories that allows the listener to question their own perspective on a variety of universal concerns and, above all else, an incredible display of varied musicality and instrumental exploration. Martin Rivas is a musician not to be overlooked. I have seen the way his gift can overtake a room, and I have experienced the beauty of these tracks and albums in my day-to-day to life. The Convalescence EP, if nothing else, is a true testament to the power of any artist to create in and under any circumstance…and in this case, to create something great. [Review, Julian Albain, 2010] A native New Yorker, Martin Rivas comes from a diversely musical family; with a mother and grandfather who both sang, and cousins that range from classical composers to up-and-coming musicians. "There's always been instruments in our house, there's always been singing, and there's always been music," Martin divulges. At the age of 11, his uncle showed him a few chords on a guitar but the rest has been self-taught, mimicking favorite records by artists like The Police to learn style and composition. After playing gigs at CBGB's, The Bitter End, and Kenny's Castaways with his band "Serious Pilgrim" in the early nineties, the group parted ways and Martin took time off from the music business, only resuming recording, writing, and self-producing CDs "Bottleneck" and "Glorious" within the past eight years. In 2005, Martin met drummer Craig Meyer, and the duo created a force called "Campfire" that has spread throughout the New York music scene. Playing approximately 1,000 shows over the past four years, "Campfire" began as a favor to the owner of the Red Lion. "Craig and I were playing with Jessie Gage, and sometimes on Sundays we would go to Washington Square Park and play under the arch, and then head to the Red Lion afterwards," Martin explains. One Sunday, the owner asked Martin and Craig to fill a three-hour time slot because someone had cancelled. The duo gladly accepted, entertaining the audience with a variety of rhythm and blues songs from the likes of Stevie Wonder and Otis Redding, amongst others, and received such a fabulous response it became a weekly gig. "Campfire" grew to be a Friday and Sunday night staple at Red Lion, as well as part of Tuesday nights at Slane Public House and Wednesdays at Prohibition. The concept is simple: Martin and Craig play a variety of covers and original songs, mostly chosen by the audience. "It's all about what the folks want to hear," says Rivas. "They write their requests down and bring them up [to the stage]." The duo randomly pick and play what is written- no rehearsal, no warning-resulting in an entertaining show that gets the audience singing, dancing, clapping, and coming back for more. Another example of brilliance that recently developed out of the Martin and Craig brain trust is "Backscratch Sessions," which debuted at the Red Lion in April. "Backscratch," an idea a year and half in the making, dances with the concept of artists getting together to play each other's songs: each playing an original, a cover, and a cover of a fellow artist (which is a surprise). "There are so many fabulously talented artists playing around here that we said let's make it happen now," Rivas enthusiastically proclaimed. With a line-up that included Dave Pittenger, Kailin Garrity, Rachel Platten, Dan Torres, Nick Howard, Robbie Gil, and Amy Regan, to name a few, the night was a huge success and is becoming a regular event. "I was pleasantly surprised because we left there feeling like family," Martin beamed, "it was such a great vibe." Not only incredibly gifted in exploring other people's songs, Martin also writes beautiful and infectious music and lyrics of his own, as seen in 2005's "Pride of the Valley" and the brand new "Sea of Clouds," currently being mixed and mastered with Dave Pittenger. "Pride of the Valley" was a therapeutic process for Rivas, as many songs deal directly and indirectly with the loss of his stepbrother on 9/11, who worked for Cantor Fitzgerald in the North Tower. Despite the song's upbeat demeanor, the lyrics for the crowd favorite "North," actually came from a dream that they found his stepbrother's body- visions of comfort, sorrow, and joy fill the listener and demonstrate Martin's unbelievable ability to bring a smile and foster hope through music. A mainstay of the New York singer/songwriter community, Rivas has had the pleasure of watching this current scene evolve and transform over the past few years. With so many talented singer/songwriters and musicians to choose from Martin claims, "I can't imagine a greater concentration of talent at any time other than what's taking place right now in New York. It's a different industry now; every artist has immediate and instant global reach. And you can do with it whatever you want, the question is, it there someone out there to pick up on what you're doing." "I'm floored everytime I come into the city to play," Rivas declares, observing the honest and heartfelt friendships between artists. "There are so many genuine people in this 'scene.' " Now on a steady rotation of Campfire gigs and playing out original music at The Bitter End and Rockwood Music Hall, Martin Rivas is gearing up to release "Sea of Clouds," a record whose theme deals with messages of surviving and thriving in the face of turmoil. Working with several musicians and friends on the album inspired trust and provided comfort throughout the process. "I know that when its finished its something I'm going to be immensely proud of for the process for as much as it sounds," Rivas affirms. A campfire is the perfect image for a Martin Rivas performance- it's warming, comfortable, social and endearing. New York is a vast city, difficult at times to make your way around, easy to get lost in... so if you haven't been to a Campfire, Backscratch, or Martin Rivas show, venture over one evening. I promise, you will feel like you just found home. + Cara Sebastian (no, not 2 characters from Brideshead Revisited) - is a guitar thumping- string slapping- old record of a person who likes to notice things about people. She has just finished making an EP in a tiny bedroom in Dalston with one mic and an old friend which refuses to record digitally, and is very proud with how its turned out and that they didn't kill each other in the process - definitely one to watch for the future, and say you saw her here first. There are comparisons to an early Ani Difranco, but her influences range from old Skiffle & Swing through to Prog Rock, 80s & 90s Pop-Soul and wonky blues.

There were full of wild hope; multiple drummer mishaps and major label screw-overs haven’t dulled the relentless assault, the ultra-cool feral rock n roll, the grunt, the sheer Iggy-says-fuck-you of it all. THE MAGIC BAND
The Magic Band History Early in the year 2001, John "Drumbo" French had a vision of re-uniting the original band that had recorded Captain Beefheart's ( aka Don Van Vliet) Trout Mask Replica and adding Art Ed Marimba Tripp on marimba and drum kit. The vision was primarily to do instrumental versions of the earlier material of Don Van Vliet - especially from the albums Trout Mask Replica and Lick My Decals off, Baby. Being encouraged to pursue this effort by BBC producer Elaine Shepherd and contacted by Paul Smith, an investor and former owner of an independent UK label, French began to contact the members. Mark "Rockette Morton" Boston was interested for sure. Bill "Zoot Horn Rollo" Harkleroad was mildly interested, but neither Jeff "Antennae Jimmy Semens" Cotton nor Tripp were the least bit interested. Undaunted, French contacted Denny "Feelers Rebo" Walley, who was greatly enthused with the idea. After a trip to Oregon in August 2001 to meet with Harkleroad and Smith, a decision was made to organize a rehearsal of three compositions - Hair Pie, Steal Softly Thru Snow, and My Human gets me Blues. The rehearsal was scheduled for Oct. 26th - 29th for Bill, Denny, Mark, and John at French's house in Lancaster, California - location of the former childhood homes of both Don Van Vliet and Frank Zappa. All this was planned before that fateful day - 9/11/01 - in which the worst terrorist attacks in US history happened on our home turf. With all the new airport security measures in place, things were questionable for a time, but the guys still flew in from Georgia, South Carolina, and Oregon to LAX and drove the two-hour drive to Lancaster. After the three days of rehearsal, it was determined that we could still play the material, and so we settled in to write down a repertoire. Beginning work on the project happened simultaneously with changes in plans and offers by the promoter. It became more questionable with each offer what the actual offer was going to be, so French withdrew from the project until a year later when promoter Barry Hogan of All Tomorrow's Parties stepped into the ring in August of 2002. Hogan made a good solid offer, put it in writing, and asked French if he and the rest would be interested. Harkleroad withdrew, but Boston and Walley remained ready to commit. Soon, former MB guitarist Gary "Mantis" Lucas replaced Harkleroad. After deciding upon a repertoire, it was evident that many of the songs needed a singer and French auditioned for the job. This left filling the drum position for over half the repertoire. French voted for Robert Williams and this was agreed upon. A rehearsal CD was funded by ATP so that the group - scattered all over the country - would have the funds to rehearse for about 6 days in a small studio in Palmdale called Paradox Sound owned by John Sweeney in late January early February 2003. The CD was called "Back to the Front," French both playing drums and singing, as the contract had been signed before the inclusion of Robert Williams. Performances in UK that Spring included the ATP Camber Sands Festival, and Shepherd's Bush Empire in London. That November - five weeks after French broke his back in a fall, The Magic Band played the Queen Mary Ship in Long Beach California - Michael Traylor replacing Robert Williams on Drums. The festival was curated by Simpson's creator Matt Groening, who introduced The Magic Band as "my favorite band." All the crowds were enthusiastic and receptive. The Royal Festival Hall followed in January 2004, with The Fall opening for The Magic Band, and a quick hop to Edinburgh, Scotland followed for a night at The Liquid Room to a sellout crowd. A UK tour was then offered the following Spring / Summer starting with one date in Amsterdam at the famed Paradiso, and which included performances at Glastonbury Festival and the John Peel ( famous UK DJ who had "discovered" Captain Beefheart and his Magic Band at Hollywood's Whiskey a' Go Go in the mid sixties) Maida Vale radio show - thus affirming The Magic Band as a "valid" reunion group. Sadly, John Peel passed away the following October. Malcolm Mills of Proper Records, having heard the band at Glastonbury, released a live CD in 2005 entitled 21st Century Mirror Men and The Magic Band had another successful tour of the UK in 2005. In 2006, after a booking agent failed to come through on a promise of a European tour, the band played two performances in Sweden. One was at the M.A.D.E Festival in Umea and the other in Club Fasching in downtown Stockholm. This was preceded by a early morning Television appearance on Swedish television, which was initiated by Ralf NygÂrd. After this, due mostly to scheduling conflicts with guitarist Gary Lucas - who is constantly touring and performing - The Magic Band disbanded in the Fall of 2006. An offer from Barry Hogan in the Summer of 2009 sparked a resurrection of The Magic Band with Eric Klerks ( guitarist) replacing Gary Lucas, and drummer Craig Bunch replacing Michael Traylor, who was unable to commit due to knee surgery. Both replacements are from Drumbo's band who was formed to promote his CD "City of Refuge" - an album "in the tradition of the Magic Band featuring other prominent Magic Band members released November 2008.

The Milk + Party Club
The Milk's contemporary twist on classic soul, hip-hop and ska has already won a wealth of support. With fans everywhere from NME, The Guardian and Neon Gold to Zane Lowe, Huey Morgan and The Sun, the band are sure to be one to watch throughout 2012. This massive twenty-eight date tour will see them preview songs from their forthcoming debut album, produced by celebrated DJ and remixer Brad Baloo (The Nextmen). Having been friends since school, The Milk began life as a teenage punk band: after some disastrous efforts to act rock-and-roll, the group soon split, though lead-singer Rick's belting soulful voice arguably benefited from these loud, formative years. Sometime later, the boys revisited the classic Motown, Stax and Trojan Records that had soundtracked their teens, intent on putting on a club night. Instead, they hit a creative breakthrough. Holed up in the shed at the bottom of their garden, all new songs and sounds were experimented with, which were written in-between and sometimes in response to a series of make-do jobs in Wickford, Essex. The Milk have since penned a deal with Sign Of The Times / Sony, and following their latest EP ('B-Roads & B-Sides', December 19), they will announce further plans for release shortly.

LIMEHOUSE LIZZY
Renowned for an action-packed pyrothechnic-fuelled explosion of a show, Limehouse Lizzy continue to keep the spirit of Celtic rock icon Philip Lynott and his band Thin Lizzy alive, well and dominating stages worldwide. Attention to detail, playful audience interaction and that all important X-factor that leaves you with the feeling of witnessing the real thing have led to their performance being described as “beyond tribute”, by both audience and critics alike. Following the enormous success of their ˜Live & Dangerous” & ˜Dedication” tours, the band embarked upon their “Into the Limelight” 2008 tour to tie in with their appearance on an episode of BBC2’s ‘Arena’ documentary series of the same name. The tour travelled as far as a headline slot at the Rhodes Rock festival in Greece, and the Virgin Atlantic Music festival in Barbados. The band appeared alongside diverse world music acts, and played a Thin Lizzy set representing the celtic rock genre. In 2012 the band's European tour continues to explore and celebrate the artistic and musical legacy of the hard-living, hard-rocking, yet at times surprisingly tender and romantic artist that was Philip Lynott. This year they will be appearing in the UK, Ireland, Germany, France, Holland and Belgium. Expect more of the Celtic influenced tracks like ”Whisky in the Jar” and “Black Rose”, amongst the usual razzamatazz and classic tracks “The Boys are Back in Town”, “Sarah” and many others we’ve come to expect from one of the most highly rated acts on the circuit. '...Limehouse Lizzy Top PRS For Music's Hardest Working UK Bands List' Billboard Magazine 2011 "Limehouse Lizzy's Wayne Ellis, an uncanny ringer for Phil Lynott..." The Guardian “entertainment for more than a decade…fantastic live music” Arena BBC2 “if you're sceptical about tribute acts, you won't be after seeing Limehouse Lizzy” Radio Times *Special support act to be announced ...*

JAKE MORLEY
Jake Morley is a remarkable guitar player and singer-songwriter. He plays guitar across his lap and slaps, taps, plucks and picks the instrument to produce a sound like no-one else. His instrumental skill is combined with masterly writing, crafting songs that are both engaging and instantly memorable. Add to that his ability to deliver them to his audience in an engaging manner and it’s no surprise that people return to his gigs time after time. The first half of 2011 has been full on for Jake, starting with a sold out gig at London’s Bush Hall and followed by a series of gigs and supports in the south of the UK. A London City Showcase at the 100 Club and a performance at Music Week’s Breakout night brought in bookings for over 10 summer festivals including the Isle of Wight, Secret Garden Party and Aeon. A storming live session for Janice Long at Radio 2 has led to further support from Jo Whiley and Dermot O’Leary, as well as Chris Hawkins and Tom Robinson at 6 Music. The second half of the year looks set to be even busier. After a very busy festival season, a full UK tour kicks off in Scotland in mid-September which will see Jake covering most of the country in the following six weeks. Most of the gigs will include John Parker (formerly of Nizlopi) on double bass and some will have a full band line-up with the inclusion of keyboards and drums/percussion. Jake’s debut album, Many Fish To Fry was released to his fans earlier this year through his own label, Sandwich Emporium Records. As a result of his growing profile and to coincide with the UK tour, the album will receive a full release at the end of September supported by a full promotional campaign for radio, press, online and retail. Life’s not going to get quieter for Jake Morley any time soon.

Nazareth + Juall
Nazareth are one of the UK's finest ever classic rock bands. The band are perhaps best known for their breakthrough albums, 'Razamanazz' and 'Loud n Proud' - (both 1973) and their chart-storming singles, 'Bad Bad Boy', 'Broken Down Angel' , 'Love Hurts', 'My White Bicycle' and their remarkable adaptation of Joni Mitchell's 'This Flight Tonight'. Since then the band have released a steady stream of top-notch albums and retained a steadfast, almost rabid fan base across the world. Nazareth has sold an impressive over 60 million records in their 40 year music career worldwide for which they count as one of the best known and most successful Scottish bands ever. On their new album 'Big Dogz', they have returned to their roots, pure rock music with its rough edges, like it's straight from the '70s. Exactly how rock should sound - and that's how Nazareth lays it down. Formed in 1968, Nazareth sprung from the ashes of a semi-professional local band, 'The Shadettes', eventually taking their name from the opening line from 'The Weight' - the classic song by The Band. Releasing their first album in 1971, the band still features the gravel-voiced DAN McCAFFERTY and bassist PETE AGNEW, alongside lead guitarist JIMMY MURRISON and LEE AGNEW who has more recently taken over the drum stool for so long occupied by the sadly departed DARRELL SWEET. For their 40th anniversary, Naz decided to record a come-back album. earMUSIC released 'The Newz' in 2008, proving once again that Nazareth is fully committed to rock and always satisfy with great songwriting and a fresh sound. The contemporary production brilliantly held true to their roots and really emphasize the extraordinary voice of Dan McCafferty. 'Big Dogz' was recorded in Prague and mixed in Basel, produced by guitar player Jimmy Murrison and young Swiss sound-wizard Yann Rouiller, the album has a challenging approach to production. In contrast with rock music's current tendency to be clean and overproduced in order to be perfect and easily consumed, Nazareth´s album focuses on capturing the dangerous and challenging edge that rock music should have, too often lost in the chase for perfection. For this reason, Nazareth have always truly concentrated on bringing out that dirty, challenging, edginess of real rock

A hit with audiences since it's premiere 127 years ago, this tale of love, deceptions and misunderstandings, set in Japan, where flirting is punishable by death, is returning to York this March with a twist. Pop Will Eat Itself
A new era dawns for iconic band Pop Will Eat Itself, with a revival by principal songwriter and co-frontman Graham Crabb. The inspiration behind the music was the challenge to create a classic PWEI album a full 25 years after the first EP release, that sounds more exciting and relevant than most of what was being produced in 2011. Says Graham; "It had been my desire to revive Pop Will Eat Itselffor a number of years but there came a point when it was clear the original band members wouldn't be committing to any future project in the band's name. I saw this as a sad waste, as I felt I had armed myself with the best batch of songs I've ever written, and felt I still had a lot to prove. I would like nothing better than to elevate PWEI to a higher level than before. That might be ambitious but that's the way I am." The new album ‘New Noise Designed By A Sadist' was released on October 3rd 2011 on Cooking Vinyl, totally finished & mastered, having been mixed by Sulpher duo Monti & Rob Holliday (also guitarist with Prodigy, Marilyn Manson) . Adds Graham, "I don't want to make a big issue of the 25 years thing, but I think it's funny, I was chaos & mayhem personified then, so I didn't expect to be alive now, let alone writing my best PWEI songs to date." Part of Graham's burning drive is the belief that Pop Will Eat Itself were, in the recent words of DJ Tiga ‘chronically underrated' and also a desire to emerge from the shadows of former PWEI buddy and now soundtrack maestro Clint Mansell. And with a full UK tour in July this year, he will achieve just that. "We'll be performing some of Clint's best songs with his blessing. The likes of Ich Bin Ein Auslander and Wise Up Sucker are awesome tunes that still stand proud and fit the PWEI blueprint of sonic assaults built on relentless grooves." With a string of Top 40 UK and US hits, Pop Will Eat Itself rose to prominence fuelled by Crabb-penned tunes such as ‘There Is No Love Between Us Anymore', ‘Bulletproof', ‘RSVP', ‘Get The Girl, Kill The Baddies' and many, many others. MATT ANDERSEN
Breaking Through, One Audience at a Time … The best performing songwriters, the ones who sound like they really mean what they’re singing about, tend to come from areas known for hard times and hard work. Like say, Perth-Andover, a rural blue-collar village in the Canadian Maritime province of New Brunswick—the home of acclaimed singer-songwriter and guitarist Matt Andersen. “Through Eric Clapton I got into B.B. King, which led me to the Chicago electric stuff and eventually back to the Mississippi Delta guys,” says the 30-year-old singer. “What really hit me most about the blues was its total honesty.” Matt began to build his name on the Canadian circuit, his imposing voice and slashing slide guitar making a monolithic impression on audiences. After playing the prestigious 2004 East Coast Music Awards, Matt continued cultivating crowds, appearing with Randy Bachman, Bo Diddley, Little Feat, America, Loverboy, April Wine, and others. By 2009 Matt had completed his fourth tour of the UK, where The Times called him “Canada’s greatest guitarist.” In 2010 he became the first Canadian to win Memphis’s famed International Blues Challenge, which led to festival dates in France, Italy, and the US, where he toured with Old Crow Medicine Show. Matt’s newest album, Coal Mining Blues, was produced by Colin Linden (who co-wrote and plays on several tunes) and recorded at Levon Helm Studios in Woodstock, New York. Featuring the Band keyboardist Garth Hudson and Olabelle singer Amy Helm, it’s a rich vein of new songs, many addressing the trying lives of working people. “I’m not trying to change anyone’s lives in a big way, but I love it when [listeners] really get involved in the music,” says Matt, performs over 200 shows a year and in 2011 won the Maple Blues Awards for Entertainer of the Year and Acoustic Act of the Year and was nominated for four East Coast Music Association awards. “That’s what really makes it a great night, for everyone.”.

The Minutes + ...And The Hangnails
Hands up, who likes rock and roll? And by rock and roll we mean proper rock and roll, born in the 50's , dragged kicking and screaming through the past fifty years or so, passed from generation to generation under the stewardship of true believers. This is not rock and roll off the conveyor belt. This is visceral, bloody and urgent. Music imbued with a defiant , exuberant energy that has never died. Welcome to the world of The Minutes! Dublin cousins Mark Austin (guitar / vocals) and Shane Kinsella (drums) have been playing together since they were nippers - all Fisher Price guitars and Chad Valley backlines. Years later having recruited fellow Dubliner Tom Cosgrave on bass the band invested in some serious vintage amplification the trio got serious and so heralded the The Minutes for real. With a background steeped in a diverse array of musical loves and inspirations - be it Johnny Marr , local heroes Thin Lizzy or Lenny Kaye's ‘Nuggets' boxset, The Minutes channel their own primal surge of rock ‘n' roll and entertain in their own way ! Having honed their craft on home territory over the past couple of years , the band have recently spread their collective wings and have cemented a reputation that precedes them - as a gig thirsty trio who have as good a time as the fans who come to seem them with tunes to more than match the swagger! The band's debut album ‘Marcata' takes it's name from the upstate New York recording studio where the band nailed the whole album in a five day blowout under the watchful of Kevin McMahon (The Walkmen, Titus Andronicus) and working old school direct to magnetic tape, eschewing the Pro-Tools digital set up favoured by so many these days...With a debut single ‘Black Keys' making all the right noises, picking up plaudits - both on air, in print and online The Minutes set their sights on 2012. ‘Marcata' (MODCIT17CD) is released on January 30th 2012 through Dublin's Model Citizen Records and will be available through all usual outlets, both on CD and digitally. The single ‘Heartbreaker' will be released just in time for Valentines Day on 13th February 2012

The Waterboys
Folk rockers The Waterboys will be making their return to the York Barbican next spring after the release of their new album An Appointment with Mr Yeats. The Waterboys, formed by Mike Scott, have gone through many different musical phases in their career, from their early rock and roll ‘Big Music’ days, which led them to support both The Pretenders and U2, to their Irish folk influenced music of the 1980’s, back to Radiohead inspired experimental rock as heard in their 2000 album A Rock in the Weary Land. Receiving much critical acclaim, The Waterboys have influenced musicians such as Eddie Veder, Johnny Goudie and Bono. An Appointment with The Waterboys will be an evening dedicated entirely to their music, with no support act. Mike Scott confirms that one half of the show will be “a killer set of vintage Waterboys” to please their most ardent of fans, including songs such as the classic The Whole of the Moon. The other half will concentrate on An Appointment with Mr Yeats which has received rave reviews. The Waterboys will be appearing in a new seven-piece line up including legendary fiddler Steve Wickham, Irish chanteuse Katie Kim, keyboard ace James Hallawell, lap steel/ electric guitar maestro Melvin Duffy, bassman Marc Arciero and drummer Raplh Salmins.

Nanci Griffith
Country and folk singer Nanci Griffith will play York Barbican on Friday 23rd March. Tickets are on sale now and cost £20.00 and £25.00. Support comes from special guests The Kennedy’s. Whether performing her own poetically evocative material or the compositions of her influences, friends, and peers, Nanci Griffith possesses a powerful gift for inhabiting the songs she sings - for communicating unspoken intimacy and heartache through her tender voice and lilting, delicate phrasing. Rolling Stone magazine once described her as a unique form of "folkabilly" music. Yet Griffith emerged as more than just a bright star in a new genre. In a career that has now spanned nearly three decades, numerous awards (including three GRAMMYS and the BBC's Life-Time Achievement Award) and twenty studio albums she continues to trail blaze that path into 2012.

Anti Nowhere League + Shotgun Effect
An infamous group of hardcore punk rock anarchists, Anti Nowhere League have been living the punk lifestyle for three decades. Lead singer Animal and his friend Magoo formed the band in 1980, and promptly got arrested at their very first gig. The history of the League is littered with brushes with the law, rock and roll misbehaviour and very loud music. There have been band break-ups and reformations aplenty, but Animal and his chums can be found plying their wares to this very day.

The Rifles
On January 16th 2012 The Rifles release ‘Sweetest Thing'. It features one Paul Weller on guitar and is the second single from their critically-acclaimed third album ‘Freedom Run'. This hugely uplifting single sees the band at a new peak of songwriting skill and delivery. As the feverish crowd at their recently sold out Forum gig attested, ‘Sweetest Thing' is already a live anthem and will no doubt be a festival favourite next year. 2011 has been a great year for The Rifles. With an a air of optimism and positivity bolstering the band, ‘Freedom Run' was recorded at Paul Weller's Black Barn studio and produced by the legendary Chris Potter (The Clash, The Stones, The Verve). It shaped up to be their most accomplished album to date: the ante was considerable upped and the band's sound developed into something fresh and energized, but will all the hallmarks of a classic. The Rifles then set off on a massive headline tour and sold out every venue. If all that wasn't enough the band launched their own beer. Served cold in 330ml bottles, ‘The General' comprises a combination of Maris Otter Pale malt and fine wheat malt, which gives the refreshing brew real zest. For further details, see www.signaturebrew.co.uk. The video for ‘Sweetest Thing' was created by the hotly-tipped director Ferry Gouw, the man behind recent artwork and videos for Major Lazer, Mad Decent, Roxy Music, Simian Mobile Disco and Bloc Party.

Halloe Away + Special Guests
Halloe Away were formed in October 2010, when college friends Alex and Joe decided to bring a fresh approach to a music scene heavily dominated by punk/screamo bands, with a new take to the acoustic/folk genre, drawing comparisons to Mumford and Sons & Noah and the Whale. After playing some highly successful gigs local, they decided to embark on a bigger sound, getting Chris in on Bass, just in time to see Halloe Away earn 2nd place in Selby Battle of the Bands competition; taking reviews such as “acoustic troubadours – Halloe Away – gave a masterclass in how to work a crowd, with a perfectly compiled collection of infectious sing-alongs.” This new line-up has seen Halloe Away go from strength to strength. The band recently played on the main stage at Harrogate’s CultureShock festival, and supported Glastonbury new comer Sea of Beas in York, and the Scottish supergroup The Burns Unit, on their respective UK tours. Now the recordings are done and the brand new EP is available for FREE download from www.soundcloud.com/halloeaway.

RSJ
Now in their tenth year (first show at Fibbers August 2002, pop pickers), RSJ have always been about one thing: Constructing heavy music and destroying stages and since 2002, have released two EPs and two albums to flawless reviews from publications such as Metal Hammer, Kerrang!, Terrorizer and numerous e-zines. Their last album "Gain to Nothing" (2007) continued this trend with yet more stunning reviews and contained a host of bonus material including a remix by Matt Wilcock of death metal giants Akercocke. The video for the "Deadbolt" was also aired on both Scuzz TV and MTV2’s Headbanger's Ball and The Riot. RSJ have toured and gigged with a wide variety of scene luminaries such as Soilwork, Biohazard, Unearth, Funeral For A Friend and The Berzerker to name but a few. Along the way the band have proudly secured endorsements with ESP Guitars & Basses and Hughes & Kettner Amplification. In October 2007, RSJ won the award for Best Metal Band at London's Glasswerk National Music Awards, automatically earning them a headline run on the Scuzz TV stage at the legendary Bloodstock Open Air Festival. 2008 also saw the band win Metal Hammer's "Famous For 15 Minutes" competition, earning them the opening slot on The Unholy Alliance Tour: Chapter III, playing alongside Slayer, Trivium, Mastodon and Amon Amarth. 2009 and 2010 saw the RSJ take on the festival circuit playing London's Hellfire Festival and Headlining Ireland's Lowend Festival before heading to Knebworth Park to play the mighty SONISPHERE FESTIVAL 2010 alongside Metal giants such as IRON MAIDEN, RAMMSTEIN, ALICE COOPER, PLACEBO, PENDULUM, ALICE IN CHAINS, MOTLEY CRUE and EUROPE. "The ability to switch with ease from atmospheric subtlety to an all-out riff storm, the band it seems, are worthy of the hype” - METAL HAMMER "One of the heaviest metal bands from the UK in a long time." NUTS MAGAZINE "Spine rattling polyrhythms and gargantuan guitars make this the best kind of musical sore thumb..." KERRANG!
